Cathedral on a cathedral roof

A cathedral roof is a ceiling with two sloping sides that meet at the room’s center. Skylights constructed for a cathedral roof needs a custom template of the roofs pitch to create a 90 degree angle of the skylights.

NOT RECOMMENDED

Shed on a cathedral roof

The skylight is constructed in a square.

By installing a shed roof skylight on a cathedral roof you are installing a square skylight instead of a custom pitched skylight, measured to match the pitch of your roof.

Since a cathedral skylight is built to mimic the pitch of the cathedral roof it can be done on a shed roof, mimicking the pitch of the shed roof.

But since a shed skylight is built squared, it cannot be done on a cathedral roof or the space between the skylights will exceed 9″

TWO SKYLIGHT
TWIN SKYLIGHT

what can be done with a 10ft wide unit?

skylights are available in single units that can be up to a width of 10ft.

When a skylight opening is 10ft we offer the option of a twin skylight.

what is the benefit of a twin skylight?

The benetfits of a twin skylight is only one whole in the roof instead of 2 holes allowing for better water proofing. The center beam on a twin is built with a lighting truft.

what is a lighting truft?

The lighting truft is a hollow space in the center beam which would allow for your electrician to put any fixture backing and wiring into. If you are planning to have any kind of center lighting (ex. chandelier, led lighting, track lighting, spot lights, ceiling fan, strip lights etc.) you will require the truft

depth of centers compared

The center beam between 2 units is the depth of your skylights. (standard is approx. 121512)
The center beam depth on a twin skylight is 12″

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR...

soffits & overhangs

Any objects overhanging the skylight area may render the section directly beneath it non-kosher for Sukkos.

DAMAGED UNIT FROM A CASEMENT WINDOW

Any low overhangs such as a casement window or a low hanging soffit may prevent the unit from opening to a full 90 degrees as well as damaging the protruding item
